Salmonella in alfalfa sprouts?

Recent news reports are warning people in certain states that alfalfa sprouts are a salmonella risk. Has this been happening before? We use them all the time in salads. I didn't realize they carried a contamination risk.

Every time I turn around, something else has the risk of spreading Salmonella. What are they doing that this keeps getting on the vegetables and fruits?

It's hard to even go through the produce section these days without conjuring up all sorts of mental images of what they are doing to food. I heard recently about what migrant workers did in the vegetable fields as a joke. I don't believe most of it, but still, it makes you think twice.
