Can you store handmade soap indefinitely, or is it better to use it within a certain time frame? I have always assumed that as long as it's not sitting in the sun or something, it's fine until you get around to using it, but a friend of mine thinks it's only "good" for a year.

I had one soap that I kept for a year and it started to smell a little rancid. On the other hand, I've kept soaps made of clay for years. I think it depends on a number of things (one being the ingredients and possibly how it holds up with drying)

I think it really depends on the amount of items you place inside of the soap. I know some of the soaps I have used which were homemade lasted me for a couple of years. However, other soaps barely lasted a year because they had more things in it which decomposed quickly.
