Growing herbs for Year round use

Every time I plant herbs, I try to plant them with the knowledge that someone in the house will eventually catch a cold or get sick somehow. What are some herbs that you try to keep on hand year around? I am a big catnip and thyme fan.

I use parsley in a lot of meals. It is a good one to have year round as long as you replant to ensure there is plenty on hand.

Do you grow your herbs indoors, outdoors or a combination? We live in northern Vermont, so weather is obviously an issue. I have always grown outdoors in the past as we just moved from the south. I need to educate myself on this new climate and hope I can grow year round.
