Why would this herb garden kit be in the toy department?

I found a dome terrarium kit for herbs that I'm thinking of buying. It grows basil, dill, sage, cilantro and parsley from seed. It's a good price and doesn't seem to take up a lot of room. I don't understand why it would be in the toy department, though - any ideas?

Does anyone have an online source for apple cider vinegar?

I've checked what passes for health food stores in my area, but cannot find organic apple cider vinegar with the mother still in it. What you buy on the store shelves at the ordinary grocery store is still good for you, but not nearly as beneficial as vinegar that still contains the mother.

Which oils cause the most allergies?

I want to make some soaps for Christmas gifts and if it's successful, then I'll add them to my inventory for craft fairs and the like. I know some essential oils are more likely to trigger allergies than others but which ones are the most common? I want to avoid them for my inventory, I think.

    Berry gardens?

How many of you grow your own berries or have some wild varieties on your property? I'm thinking of trying to set up a corner for this, but I haven't decided which type(s) yet. Many are so good for you, not just in the fruit, but in the medicinal properties found in various parts of the plants.

    Homemade shampoo and conditioner?

I just read that you can use baking soda and water to wash your hair, and then condition it with apple cider vinegar (with mother preferred) and water. No weird chemicals like you find in commercial products, which is a good thing, but it seems to simple to work. Anyone every tried these...

    Does oregano have medicinal properties?

A friend of mine just gave me some from her garden. I'm not a big fan of oregano in cooking, but hers has a beautiful fragrance so I'm thinking it's a different kind than what I buy in the store. I might add some to my garden next spring, just for the smell, but I'd rather use it medicinally...

I might grow oregano (and I don't even like it much)

A friend of ours has a lovely garden and a number of herbs growing along with vegetables. She brought us a bunch of parsley, chives and oregano from her garden the other day. As I was cleaning off the oregano to bag up, I was entranced with the smell. I don't normally use oregano often as it...

    Apple cider vinegar?

I've been reading up on this after both a friend and my mother told me how taking apple cider vinegar twice a day helps them. My friend has been doing it for years to relieve arthritis, and he swears it works. My mom started it a few weeks back to kick her past a weight loss plateau. She said...

    Minced garlic in the jars

How long does minced garlic stay good in the refrigerator? I use it in everything, just about, so I was thinking of buying a really large restaurant-type jar. I'm not sure how long it will last, but I'm sure it's a few months' worth. Is that too long?

Truly authoritative sources for herbal information?

Other than Herbalist Hut, that is. It's hard to do real research and find the truth about different herbs and herbal concoctions because of all the misinformation printed out there. Unfortunately, too many shysters and quacks have published outlandish and unscientific claims about many herbals...

Harvard adding a nontraditional medicine institute

What I don't get is how they can call herbal medicine and natural medicine 'nontraditional'. It doesn't get any more traditional, does it? Herbs and other natural medicines have been in use since cavemen. If anything, it's Western medicine that's nontraditional.

    My basil has blossomed

Can I still harvest leaves or does this mean it's too late for them to be still good? I was thinking of bringing the pot inside for the winter, but I'm not sure if I can do that with basil or not. Does anyone here grow basil and can tell me if this is a good idea or not?

    Breast cancer gene

Have you been tested to see if you carry the breast cancer gene? I haven't, as there is no history of breast cancer in my family at all, but a few of my friends are considering getting tested. I'm just curious as to how they do this and what would you do if you were told you have the gene?

    Buying essential oils

Where do you buy your oils? I'm looking at places online, as there are no really good places to buy locally. I want to be sure to order from a reputable source so that I get pure oils and I want them to be totally organic.

    Are most herbs perennials?

I am building a raised bed to use for a real herb garden next year, instead of the haphazard way I've grown herbs so far. It will be small, only a 12x12 bed, so I want to figure out the best use of the space. I'd prefer to use only perennials, so that I don't have to replant every year. Any...

    Buying bulk supplies?

Where do you guys buy your supplies for making soaps, bath fizzes, bath salts, etc.? Buying my supplies at Joanne's is too expensive for all the time and I want to make a bunch for Christmas, as well as a charity bazaar.

    Anyone here try SUP?

That's stand up paddleboarding, if you haven't heard of it. A place opened in the strip mall I work at and he's got a great price on classes and tours. The guy assured me that I don't need to be super athletic to be able to do it.

    Can basil be frozen?

I like fresh basil and I am drying some, as well, but I was wondering if the leaves can be frozen and still be used like fresh? I was thinking if they were frozen on cookie sheets, then I could take out leaves one at a time as I need them, but I don't want to if they'll get icky.

    Absorbing more iron

For those trying to boost their iron levels, I wanted to make you aware of something. When you take iron supplements, or even eat iron-rich foods, your body can not absorb it all so you lose a lot of it. Drink a small glass of orange juice when you take the supplement or eat and it helps your...

    Is candle making hard?

I use a lot of candles, both in my rituals and just because I like them. I usually buy them in a local Wiccan shop nearby, but I really think they would have more energy and meaning if I made them myself. Is it difficult to get started?
