In an emergency this makes an awesome candle

This post at least reminds me to pick up some more emergency candles. We used a lot of them during the last hurricane. We were without power for 8 days. I don't want to resort to using Crisco, but at least it's an alternative. The Crisco can also be used on the grill outside to fry up all those...

    Going Fishing!

I went a few months ago, back when the weather wasn't as brutal as the heat has been lately. Maybe I'll strike out again in the early fall. I love being outdoors, but not when I'm being cooked by the hot sun.

    Aloe in mattresses?

I heard recently about aloe vera being featured in certain mattresses. What a concept. Even though it sounds healthy and beneficial, it also sounds like there's lotion in my mattress. I need to do more research. Has anyone used one of these mattresses?

    Baking soda and regular dosing

I told my husband I had read that taking a little baking soda at night before he goes to bed might help with his indigestion and reflux. He's been doing this for a little over a week now. I'm rethinking the issue, even though I've read the box. Is there danger in having a half teaspoon of baking...

Any one here have a "Hiatal Hernia"?

My mother had one and couldn't eat things like lettuce. She never did have an operation on it, but she was a nurse and knew what to do. She was also with doctors every day, so she must have at least talked about it. She ended up with throat cancer from smoking and eventually died, but I don't...

    Dandelions

This is a great history lesson. My family came from a country background and ate all sorts of greens. They have never mentioned having dandelion greens, but I'll bet that's because there was a stigma attached to them. We made many a dandelion necklace when I was growing up. Dandelions were for...

    African Soap

A friend gave me some African soap she had found as a Christmas gift. I enjoyed it, and would love to receive more of it. If it doesn't show up in this year's Christmas stocking, I may look around and see where I can find more.

    Detergent pods

I don't see the need for them. Also, when I have used similar pods in my dishwasher, the residue and remaining parts of the plastic sac were still in the dispenser of my dishwasher. I don't want the same thing happening to my new Bosch washer, which calls for very little detergent.

    Marshmallow Root

One of the places we go to vacation in the summer has lovely white blooms on it. You see it often as you look out over the marsh lands. I learned once that it was the marsh mallow plant and that the root of this plant is what evolved into what we know as the marshmallow. It's interesting to...

    Coloring Hair in Senior years?

Some hair is much more difficult to color when it's gray, especially when it's like wire. At her age, she's entitled to do whatever she wants with her hair. My grandmother did, and she also had a couple of wigs in case she needed them.

    Smiling and Stress

I wonder if studies have been done on people whose faces don't smile easily. I know some really happy, positive people, but their faces don't always show it. Then I know some people with smiles on their faces even when they are negative and even angry. It's something in the muscles and designs...

    Are you watching the Olympics?

If the Olympics are on, I'm watching them. So, yes. I now know the names of new swimmers, new gymnasts, and even a judo wrestler or two. I still don't love the beach volleyball event, but I'm sure others do.

    Healthy practices produce results

I just visited the doctor again after about a year of being on my healthy eating plan. I decided I was tired of dieting and fussing over what I ate and counting calories. Instead, I decided to just make sure I cut down on red meat, pork, fried foods in my own kitchen and to opt for healthy...

    Final showdown!

I have to admit I'm thrilled when I see Michael and his mom, especially, grinning from ear to ear. I love seeing others have a chance, but Michael is just special.

    Herbs in a tube

We love using marinating tomatoes in chopped basil and then broiling them. Yesterday I found a tube of basil, which I decided to try. The results last night were really good, and I'm hoping this tube will last longer than the fresh sprigs of basil I buy at the store. What other great herbs in a...
