Natural Antibiotics

I have a nasty bacterial infection close to a bone that I broke and the antibiotics weren't breaking it up. I started taking turmeric and garlic and they are helping a lot, even though the antibiotics ran out. What are some other herbs that are useful against bacterial infections?

Colloidal Silver is supposed to have anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal properties and was used to fight infections before modern antibiotics were discovered. I also read in this forum that oil of oregano is good to use for that purpose.

I know that papase is a powerful anti bacterial too. It comes from papaya (carica papaya) fruits. I just don't know if it is from ripe papaya or unripe papaya.

That is awesome that you found something that worked better than the antibiotics. I will try these the next time I need them. I have tumeric and garlic in the house. What do you do, how do you know how much to mix?

I buy them in supplement form and take them as I think I need to. For the infection, (Cellulitis is what my doctor said it was, but the specialist said it's arthritis) I took two or three capsules throughout the day on most days. The garlic was 1,000 mg and the Turmeric was 500 mg. I also took Echinacea 350 mg from time to time because it supports the immune system.

When I went to the specialist, he told me to take Aleve for the swelling, which I'm doing along with the herbs. I would usually take Bromelain for swelling, but I promised someone that I would do what that doctor says. I don't know if it's the herbs, Aleve, or a combination, but the swelling has gone down now.

I sure do wish there was something I could take to make that bone pop back into place and put my elbow back together. LOL

I would be careful about this one. Colloidal Silver was listed as one of the most dangerous supplements this year. I think Consumer Reports did the study on them. There might be more about that on the forum someplace.

Arnica will help heal soft tissue (which is what swelling is) - it can be rubbed on in gel form, or taken internally as a tablet.

Colloidal Silver varies based on its quality. Homemade is unwise; do your research before purchasing!

One of the natural antibiotics that immediately comes to my mind is turmeric. It is extensively used in Indian cuisine. Some people apply turmeric powder externally also to keep away from certain type of infection.

Interesting, thanks for the info. How do you take the substance from a papaya? Is it something you can do yourself or is it factory made?

Anyway, I hear that aloe vera also has anti bacterial qualities.

The first message that was posted stated that "I have a nasty bacterial infection next to the bone". Turmeric is a very effective anti-inflammatory more so than an antibiotic, so it would help the inflammation to go down, but not necessarily cure the infection. Goldenseal is a well known anibiotic, and has been proven to be effective. Arnica is also an anti-inflammatory, but remember that it should never be taken internally. One of the oldest herbs used for healing bones, is comfrey. There has been studies that have shown comfrey to be carcinogenic, and is no longer approved for internal use, however, the amounts that rats were given in the experiments to proove this were rather large. Comfrey was also called knitbone by some. You can make a tea, or use it as a salve. It is one of the few herbs that contain allantoin (sp?), shown to be effective at a cellular level when applied on the skin. Garlic is also a good antibiotic, as stated above. Always remember though, with any infection, if the area is warm to the touch, if there is any discharge from the area,(especially green), if there is a foul smell coming from the wound, an increase in body temperature or increased pain in the area, seek medical advice immediately. Internal infections can be extremely dangerous, and can result in systemic infection, making you very ill, very quickly. You don't say how long you have had this, but also remember that some herbs may interfere with the ability of a blood test to correctly identify the bacteria if your condition should worsen

I have been reading this thread with the greatest interest. Boobah, I see, warns, rightly, to be very careful about Colloidal Silver. Then I come to the end of the page, where I can put in a comment, and the "Ads by Google", of which there are 3, are all for Colloidal Silver. Strange but true!

Great advice. Keep in mind also that colloidal silver is not an herb. You talking a whole different ball game.

I feel the need to echo what a few here have said. Please be very careful. You could hurt yourself more by not doing what is right. If you don't feel right maybe you should see the doctor again? If you still have an infection after taking antibiotics, it may need to be re-evaluated. Sometimes secondary infections will pop up and go unnoticed. It would be terrible have something bad happen, which could end up costing more including hurting your body or irreversible damage. Infections are very tricky to deal with and nothing to mess around about.

Can you visit a local herbalist in your area?

Another alternative to Goldenseal, in case for future reference, is Oregon Grape. It is not over harvested and in danger as Goldenseal, it is often better received by the body than goldenseal (quite often a therapeutic dose of goldenseal may induce a drugged feeling, yep I've had it happen), and the active constituents of OG are much the same as Goldenseal making it just as strong a valuable. It may be something you'd like to check out. It works very well for many issues.
