How to Get Referred?

How do you get referred to a Chiropractor or Acupuncture specialist? I spoke with my Primary doctor last week and she basically said tough luck.

That is who I had to use for a referral. If nothing else call the chiropractor directly and ask them what they would recommend. My husband had to do this when he wanted to get treatment for his back. The chiropractors office contacted his doctors office and told them how to fill out the paperwork so it would get approved!

Yes, I would say that usually you get your referral, if you need one, from your primary doctor. If you have any specialists for pain (such as a physiatrist) you could also ask them. But most chiropractors do not require one to be seen. Have you contacted any area chiropractors yet? Or are you requiring a referral for insurance purposes?

I am surprised a doctor would tell you that in regards to being referred to a chiropractor. If you have to have a referral for the insurance to cover it, I would try to talk to your primary care docotor again. Tell them it is something you feel strongly about trying and maybe they may okay the referral. If not, I would check into switching your primary care doctor!

Why don't you ask your health insurance company instead? They can tell you what they require. A lot of companies won't cover acupuncture but most will cover chiropracters.

I'm surprised she told you tough luck, too. Unless, of course, that means she's saying the injury you have isn't something that warrants it and she thinks you'll have a hard time finding someone that'll refer you. If that's the case, you might want to reconsider your options.

Otherwise, try calling another doctor for a second opinion. Maybe they'll give you a referral instead of a hard time.
