Helping Pets Lose Weight?

I have an older dog who is overweight and I have a horrible time getting him to lose weight. I don't feed him too much but it seems he gains weight very easily. I think he may have an underactive thyroid gland. Is there something I can give him to help stimulate the thyroid?

How sluggish is he? Have you tried taking a walk with him and increasing his exercise? I don't know much about thyroid problems in dogs.

There is medicine for thyroid problems. My previous dog had the same problem. It did help walking her and playing with her but not until she started taking meds for it.
