Do chiropractors prescribe meds?

Do chiropractors prescibe medicine like anti-inflammatories or pain meds in addition to chiropractic treatments? I know they are actually doctors so I was just curious.

I don't believe that chiropractors are licensed to prescribe prescription medication. They can recommend over the counter medications for their patients, but I do not believe that it is in their scope of care to prescribe. When I used to work at a chiropractic office they would often times recommend that patients take an over the counter like tylenol to help out with pain and inflammation.

Hope that helps!

Have a great day
Most will not prescribe drugs, nor can then. I believe New Mexico has talked about giving them limited prescriptions, but not sure how far that talk has went.

They can't here, the last I knew at least. Chiropractors do not normally go through the same medical school training that an MD does so I've never really considered them doctors.

The chiropractor I used to go see didn't give me prescription medications, but did recommend and provide me with some herbal remedies (at a price). They did increase my circulation, but were quite expensive. I quit taking them simply because I could not afford them. He also told me several years ago I had Fibromyalgia, but I did not get a second opinion. I decided I was not going to let anything stand in my way and did well health-wise until about six months ago. After all brain scans coming back showing no sign of any damage due to a couple of blackouts I am tempted to go back to see him.

As far as them being considered doctors, they most definitely get a bad rap a lot of the time. I did have one MD that told me I should go see a chiropractor after hurting myself jumping on a trampoline. It was kind of comical, because he was leery about suggesting it to me.

I have never had a chiropractor prescribe me medications. I believe you must be a MD or be under the supervision of a MD to prescribe medications. (PA or NP)

It is possible there is a chiropractor somewhere that is a MD, but the theories of healing are kind of contradictory between a MD and a chiropractor.

I have never run into a chiropractor the prescribes medication. They usually do advise me what herbs to use, but most chiropractic professionals either don't like to have patients use medications or give advise and tell the patient to see a doctor for a certain prescription.

Chiropractors are not licensed to sell prescription medication. They don't undergo the same rigorous training as physicians.

They are doctors however they cannot write prescriptions. I don't know why either. I went to one once and he tried to get me to try some herbal medicine. I did not take it - at the time I wasn't into natural meds.

It's the law - they're DCs, and DCs have an extremely limited power to prescribe meds. MDs, DOs, PAs, NPs, veterinarians, dentists, podiatrists all have power to prescribe regulated drugs; DCs, only rarely and with certain limitations.

Chiropractors are not licensed to sell or prescribe medication to their clients. It's just the way the medical system is set up here in the U.S. I'm not sure if this differs in other countries, such as European countries or even in Canada. However, I do know here, in the U.S., they are not allowed to do this.

No, chiropractors cannot prescribe medications, but they can refer you to a doctor who can. If a chiropractor sees a problem that he cannot fix, he will probably refer you to a specialist. However, while the chiropractor is treating you, he may recommend that you take an over the counter pain killer to help the pain.

They could prescribe meds of course if they are MD's as well as chiropractors, but generally the answer is no. Their methods are to move backbones around to alleviate pressure on nerves, which causes pain and muscle spasms. My grandfather was a chiropractor for 55 years and I never saw his prescribing anything.

Chiropractors generally practice holistically so there is no need for them to dole out prescription medications. They may suggest relaxation herbs or aromatherapy.

No they can't prescribe medicines I don't believe. I went to a chiropractor for a lot of years when I was younger and he never once offered me a prescription.

Chiropractors in Switzerland have prescribing rights, and those in New Mexico have limited prescription powers, but chiropractors in most other countries do not have the right to prescribe medicines.
