    Herbs to help Emphysema??

Do you need herbs that are good for the airways / respiratory tract? Try hyssop, thyme and sage. Now's a good time to harvest if you're growing any so you can use it throughout the winter. Make a tincture or a syrup out of these herbs and you can take some whenever you need it. Has your...

    Container Growing

A surprisingly large number of herbs take well to container growing! Depends really what you intend to use your herbs for. If it's mainly for culinary use, I'd focus on ones that are easy to grow from seed - basil, cilantro/coriander, oregano. Thymes will grow well in pots, as will mints. In...

    Getting Ready For Summer!

Yep, we've got a huge seed catalogue! As it's February, we've currently got the following seeds on the go - wild strawberry, verbena, beebalms (2 kinds), nicotiana (2 kinds), yarrow and soapwort. March will see us plant up a load more.

    How much to plant

It depends on the plant! If you're trying to fill a bottle with fennel seeds, you'll need quite a lot of plants. If you're talking about oregano, you'd need to harvest from 2-4 plants to fill a reasonable sized bottle.

    No Yard

Thyme, definitely. Rosemary probably won't grow so well indoors, but oregano might do ok. Grow basil and coriander from seed each year - you can grow different types of culinary basil such as Thai basil or Greek small-leaved basil.

What do I do with it?

You can freeze basil in ice cube trays with a bit of water and use them in cooking when you don't have any fresh basil available. Or make loads of pesto!

When growing herbs, does it matter which herbs are near each other?

Some plants do grow better together, but a lot of companion planting works for food crops. However, it depends on your garden and climate. For instance, certain herbs such as borage will attract aphids away from your other plants if you have a problem with insects. That's why it's good to grow...

please help me :( need outdoor nature jobs?

Have you thought of finding some local nature groups or Not-for-profits? They might need some people although I guess a lot of them look for volunteers. Still, it's always good to make new contacts as you never know what might come of it!

    Echinacea?

I think I read somewhere once that if you take echinacea every day, your immune system comes to depend on it, consequently lowering your defences. But then I'm always of the opinion that daily supplements probably aren't necessary and you can get most of it through a balanced diet. In terms of...

What would you grow in your ideal herb garden...?

I'm currently getting my new herb garden ready and want some more inspiration! What would you grow in your herb garden if you had as much space as you wanted and lots of sunshine? We're currently growing the usual culinary herbs - rosemary, lots & lots of different thymes in a small rockery...

    What are your vices?

Chocolate. Without a shadow of a doubt!! It all started when my grandmother would sneak in little chocolate buttons and pop them on my tongue to melt when I was 6 months old... Now I am a complete addict although thankfully I do know some restraint... :)

    Herbal sleep aid

If you can get them, buy some dried hops and dried lavender flowers and put them in a little fabric bag. If you sleep with that under your pillow, it should help you sleep.
