Default Fasting as detox method

I have heard people say that they are doing a fast to detox. I don't really understand how this works. Does the fasting somehow trigger a release of stored toxins?

Usually if they are fasting they are drinking a lot of water, which does tend to free up the toxins. I don't like fasting myself because I don't think it is very good for your body.

I don't like fasting either because I really like to eat. I have never actually detoxed per se, but I will spend a week or so only eating fruits and veggies to get all the bad stuff out.

You make a good point, freshfoodie, about how lots of water drinking usually accompanies a detoxing fast..

Daisy, I think that is still considered a fast, isn't it, if you abstain from particular foods for a time?

I guess I always consider fasting in it's true sense as going without any food at all. I definitely can't do that. Besides liking food, I do have low blood pressure so it would send me into the hospital if I truly fasted.

I worry a little bit about going without any food at all, too. Sometimes it is no big deal, but sometimes if I go too long without food it triggers a migraine.

Fasting gives your system a break. When you drink a lot of water while fasting, then the water helps to flush out the toxins that have built up in the body over time.

Default fasting is good..

Fasting can be good for the body. I think people do not fast because they do not know which method is the best to start. I would recommend to a newbie to start simple by first dropping red meat, then dropping ALL meat the next week. Then drop fruits. Then drop vegetables. At this point you are not eating any solids. On your liquid diet, drink fruit and vegetable juice. Now you may be ready to drink plenty of water for a day or two. Just make sure you feel yourself for health purposes. If you're moving too quick, go back a step. Do not shock the body into starvation. It will freeze up and hold on to the fat you already have stored.

My religion requires occasional fasting and I agree with others that it is a good method of detoxification. It suits the body and soul to do it once in a while.

Think of fasting as giving the digestive system a rest. The stomach and other organs connected to the digestive system do a lot of work day in and day out. Just as we would give our other organs a rest now and then, we should give our digestive system a rest, too. And fasting with a liquid diet may be a way to do some housecleaning, too.
